She has further extended her knowledge in the field of exercise conditioning and rehabilitation by undertaking various positions as a sports trainer. What is Osteopathy? Osteopathy is a form of manual medicine that focuses on total body health by treating the body's musculoskeletal framework. Osteopaths utilise a wide variety of "tools" or techniques to treat the body but most are through direct contact with the patient. In Australia, Osteopaths are statutorily registered practitioners. Every osteopath must complete the mandatory 5 year full time study, including an undergraduate Bachelor of Science (Clinical Sciences) course, then a 2 year Masters of Health Science (Osteopathy). The course focuses on anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, pathology and general medical diagnoses. Conditions Osteopaths Treat Osteopaths treat a wide variety of musculoskeletal complaints however we can also have a role in the management of a number of other conditions. Most commonly Osteopaths treat: Back and neck pain Headaches and migraines Sciatica Pain in peripheral joints Frozen shoulder Tennis elbow Carpal tunnel syndrome Knee arthritis Hip arthritis Work-related and repetitive strain injuries Sports-related injuries How do Osteopaths treat? Traditionally, Osteopaths do not encourage the use of machinery, such as ultrasound, in their treatment protocol. Techniques include the following: Soft tissue massage and deep trigger point therapy To loosen tight, bound-up muscles Stretching To lengthen out contracted, tight muscles Gentle joint articulation and mobilisation In which joints are mobilised by being passively taken through their range of motion Spinal and joint manipulation Which may be used where it is appropriate and safe to do so, though it is not the mainstay of most Osteopathic treatments. Osteopathic manipulations are carried out using minimum force levels in order to maximise safety and minimise patient discomfort. At Cardinia Sports & Spinal Clinic we may also prescribe stretching or strengthening exercises specific to the patients' needs, to enhance the treatment outcome and to prevent the problem from recurring. We work closely with sports medicine physicians, general practitioners and other health care professionals dependent upon the needs of the patient. We can refer for further investigations, such as X-rays, CT scans and MRIs where necessary, to definitively diagnose a patients condition. In some cases the osteopaths may suggest referring a patient for a surgical opinion, and can advise about probable outcomes such as prehabilitation and rehabilitation. Further, correct postural advice may be given along with recommendations on workplace ergonomics, or diet. We can also supply gym balls, pillows, braces, creams and supplements where required. Osteopathy is becoming more well known when compared to Chiropractic and Physiotherapy, however confusion still reigns. Like our Chiropractic and Physiotherapist colleagues we are leaders in back pain treatment, neck pain treatment, shoulder pain treatment, and Sports Injury Treatment. As well as being the premier Osteopath in Pakenham we also offer Dry Needling, Myotherapy and Remedial Massage Services.
